Hawaii is the only U.S. state to have a single, unified school system across the state, known as Hawaii Public Schools. There are seven different districts, and the city of Honolulu is in the Honolulu District. This district has over 32,000 students, 39 elementary schools, 9 intermediate schools, 6 senior high schools, and 3 alternate schools. Honolulu also has many private schools to choose from.

Honolulu is also the location of four universities. The University of Hawaii at Manoa has over 22,300 students enrolled in its undergraduate and graduate programs, and is especially known for its marine sciences, tropical agriculture, geophysics, astronomy, and Asian and Pacific culture programs. The Hawaii Pacific University is the largest private university in the central Pacific. The Chaminade University of Honolulu offers bachelor's and master's degrees in major arts and sciences.
